Sooooo Lazy!

20 Jan

Wow, have I been lazy! Not on the exercise front, but on the posting front.

No blog posts, no dailymile posts. Too lazy to even strap on my motoactv for my runs.

But run I have. Judging from the time guesstimate of my efforts, I would guess 25-30 miles for the week, but I will log 20 just to err on the lower end of my guess ( I don’t mind running more than giving myself credit for, but I don’t want to run less than I have given myself credit for). That’s what I get for running naked all week!

So, what did I do with my week? Well, Monday was my sweet boys birthday. A day mixed with tremendous gratitude, happiness, and fun…..with a few tears thrown in for good measure. I just ran and ran that morning feeling so grateful for all that I have. My kids are more than I could have ever hoped for, and far more than I deserve! So my Monday run was a lovely chat with the universe and nature (albeit a chilly chat), that needed no bells and whistles of pace, distance or time.

The rest of the week was a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-running-shorts type of week. I got a wild hair to give yoga another shot (and was vividly reminded why yoga and I broke up in the first place), get a bit more serious about weight training, work on speed a bit, and just for the sake of curiosity, track calories. I have never done that before so it was kind of interesting to see how I was doing on the nutrition side of things. Surprisingly, not too bad. I could stand to get more calories in me, but there are just not enough hours in the day!

So I welcome this new week, somewhat refreshed from my “week off”.

Reading about running

10 Jan

My kids think it’s weird that when I’m not running, I’m reading about running. Whether it’s my own book, a library book, a blog post, Runner’s World, or, I am frequently caught reading about running.

This from one kid who usually watches ESPN, has Sports Illustrated in one hand and on his phone in the other hand, and is most likely recording a game of some sort on the dvr. Now that I don’t get 🙂 .

When 18 years sounds like a long time……

9 Jan

But is really just a blink of an eye.

My boy. Jase is my middle child. 17 months younger than his older brother, 18 months older than his younger sister.

He is sweet, compassionate, charming, funny…..the list goes on and on.

He will be 18 years old in just a few short days. I have the hardest time during the week before any of my kids birthdays. I mourn the passing of another year of their childhood that is behind them, but I welcome the coming year too.

When they were tiny, that meant milestones coming and going. First smiles, first steps…..

When they were a bit older, it meant watching their personalities unfold, watching their independence emerge……

Now that they are older still, looking to the year ahead is an exciting/scary combination. The “what do you want to be when you grow up” question……that’s a REAL question now.

All of the questions, daydreams, and scenarios that you have ever had for your child……those are real things now!

Did I do enough, say enough, teach enough….is he ready for what 18 has to offer?

Fortunately, I have been through this once before with my oldest son. So I kind of know the answer.

Yes, yes I did do enough. I have loved that kid so hard and so fiercely, that he has no choice but to be ready for whatever this year has to offer him.

So, Happy Birthday Jase. You are loved, and you are ready.

Vegan Chocolate Pudding

The recipe is a mash-up of 2 or 3 different recipes I have seen.

1 really ripe avocado
1/4 c. Cocoa
1/4 c. Almond milk
1/4 c. Agave
3/4 t. Vanilla

Sometimes I add 1/4 of a banana if I am craving something a little sweeter.

I mix it up in a bullet or tiny food processor.

Of course this is just a guide. Depending on the size of your avocado, you may need more or less liquid. If you add the banana bit, you will definitely need more liquid. You have to play around with this recipe until you find the combination you and your sweet-tooth like the best.

Edited to add: I just made another batch of pudding with about 1/2 t. of instant coffee granules. You can thank me later 🙂 .

Songs that keep me going

3 Jan

I am one of those people who cannot run without music. I get bored, my pace gets thrown off, and I get clumsy (ok, clumsier). I don’t want to hear my feet pounding on the pavement, and I don’t want to hear myself breathing (what may or may not be my last breath) heavily.

When I first started running, I looked at all of the running watches/ fitness trackers until I settled on the Motorola motoactv. I chose this because it was a GPS and mp3 all in one. I have loved it!

My playlists change regularly but what keeps me going right now is

Ray Bands and Bombs Away- B.o.B
Seven Nation Army- The White Stripes
Boongie Drop- Lenny Kravitz
Freedom at 21- Jack White
Jesus Walks- Kanye West
Anything Skrillex, Deadmau5, or Tiesto
Lucky Strike- Maroon 5
Let Me Love You- Ne-Yo
Let Yourself Go- Green Day
Queen of the Night- Whitney Houston
Fighter- Christina Aguilera
Levitate- Hollywood Undead

I’d love to know what keeps you going….any suggestions?
